4 nights of live music at The Armidale Club

This week there is a wide variety of music starting on Wednesday night, with Kev Lymn.
In the late 1990s, Kev Lymn left
his native Australia for Europe. While living in a small village in Ireland, he became acquainted with Celtic music
and the Irish storytelling tradition which he has combined with his love for the blues.
After hitch hiking across Europe, he arrived in Berlin in the autumn of 1999 and began collaborating with various Berlin based musicians.
Musical tours out of Germany, across Europe and the USA soon followed. His song writing reflects the experiences gathered during these journeys - songs penned from an outsider’s perspective on different countries and cultures. His lyrics are full of intelligent observation and have a distinctive thought provoking mythical quality. His guitar playing is characterised by a percussive rhythmic style. It incorporates unorthodox use of slide and Irish folk tunings on dobro and 12-string guitar, creating unusually full chord voicings that resonate through his songs.
Thursday night, sees three bands travelling through from Melbourne. The bands are Trojan Kettle, dropbunny and Piranha Party - they play a mix of /metal/punk/ska/alternative music. The tour is a follow-up to Trojan Kettle’s recent, highly successful US tour, as well as to support the new dropbunny album, “Hypothesis”.
Also on Thursday Night our restaurant DeaRico’s will be open form 6.30pm. The Armidale Club welcomes Daniel, Mark and all the other restaurant employees to the club. Come down and try out DeaRico’s Italian themed restaurant. Trivia will still be held on Thursday nights from 7pm.
Friday, July 16, on their Sue Ellen tour, The Wildes the Alt-Indie country quartet from Melbourne set out on their own national tour this July and August in support of new radio single ‘Sue Ellen’. After a series of warm-up shows and festival appearances, the band will cover the coast from Sydney to Bundaberg and back to Melbourne – then regional Victoria and South Australia.
With inland showcase appearances now added in Armidale, Tamworth and Narrabri, chances are The Wildes will be in a town near you this winter!
The ‘Sue Ellen’ tour will see the band, whose debut record ranked runner-up in Radio National’s Album of The Year list in 2009, perform in intimate venues such as theatres, galleries and even converted churches.
The tour and single release is complemented by a brand new music video from director and collaborator Sean Genders (who also conceived and directed the band’s award winning clip ‘Ballad of a Young Married Man’ from the debut album of the same name). The video tells the story of one fan’s encounter with the band on a fateful evening in an outback town. Despite its tragic overtones it’s an uplifting clip, steeped in old-school charm and Polaroid nostalgia.
Something of a cross between That 70s Show and The Last Waltz, this latest offering continues to illustrate The Wildes’ love of storytelling and exudes the warmth of the band’s live show. Entry $5
